International Driving Permits & License Translations
If you have a foreign driving license, you will need an additional document: either an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a License Translation. This will be separate from your original driving license and should be carried together with your original license and passport.
The specific document required depends on the country where your original license was issued. These documents are generally easy and affordable to obtain.
International Driving Permit
For counties listed in the Geneva Convention of 1949, an International Driving Permit is required. This must be a physical booklet issued by your home country's licensing authority.
Digital IDPs (e.g., mobile app versions, PDF scans, or digital wallets) are not valid for driving in Japan.

Licence Translation
For Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Monaco and Taiwan, an official Japanese translation of your driving license is required to ride a scooter in Japan. Once in Japan, your translation can be applied for online and collected via a printing service at convenience stores.
